Our So Nice range of products are one hundo p Organic. All our other plant-based m*lks are certified non-GMO and are all natural, with no preservatives, artificial flavours, colours or additives.
2. Where are Earth’s Own beverages made?
Earth’s Own beverages are made by Earth’s Own Food Company Inc, a Canadian company based out of Burnaby, B.C. Psst, that’s the city Leonardo DiCaprio claims has the most beautiful people in the world. Just sayin’.
We spread the love to remain sustainable and manufacture in three different cities across Canada, as well as one in the USA. Our western Canadian facilities are located on Annacis Island, in Delta, BC, and our eastern Canadian facilities are in Mississauga, ON and Quebec City, QC. Our American facility is located in New York state.
3. Are Earth’s Own beverages gluten-free, dairy free and 100% vegan?
You bet! All our products are gluten-free.
Yes! All our products are 100% lactose- and dairy-free, and suitable for those who cannot or choose not to consume dairy milk.
Oooh, yeah baby! All ingredients, flavours, vitamins and minerals are plant- and mineral-based, and suitable for those following a vegan diet.
We never use MSG in any of our products, and all our flavours are natural.
We only source gluten-free oats, certified to be under 20 PPM. We are also super strict about making sure that any of our facilities that also buy wheat, rye or barley (the usual cross contamination sources for gluten) keep it far, far away from our oats. Nothing to worry about here, folks. Celiac friendly to a fault when it comes to our Oat products.
4. Are Earth’s Own beverages Kosher?
Yuppers! All our beverages are Kosher products certified Kosher by Kashruth Council of Canada (COR).
5. Are Earth’s Own cartons recyclable?
We use recyclable material for packaging wherever possible. Visit http://www.recyclecartons.ca for more information on carton recycling in Canada or check with your local recycling centre to confirm if the container is recycled in your area.
6. Why do I need to shake the product?
So you can dance to “Hey Ya!” by OutKast properly. But also, shaking before serving helps to maintain product consistency. Over time, solids, like cocoa powder and vitamins and minerals, may settle to the bottom of the carton.
7. How soon should I use Earth’s Own beverages after I open them?
After opening, our products are best when consumed within 7-10 days.
8. Can I feed Earth’s Own beverages to my child?
Our plant-based m*lks are appropriate for children aged 2 years and older as part of a well-balanced diet.
During the first two years of life, breast milk or alternatively an iron fortified infant formula is your best choice. Both of these are high in the healthy fats that growing infants need. Plant-based beverages are not a replacement for these beverages and we don’t recommend that they be given during the first year of life. For parents who want to give Earth’s Own beverages to infants between one and two years of age, we recommend first consulting with a health practitioner. Fortified Soy beverages are generally considered a reasonable nutritional replacement for cow’s milk – providing parents provide sufficient fat in the child’s diet.
Good news! Because Oat m*lk is totally and completely nut free, it’s school safe. Add in that it’s also gluten-free, it can be given to kids with nut + gluten allergies.
9. I’ve heard that Oat m*lk uses canola (or rapeseed) oil to add creaminess + body. Do you?
No canola oil here!
Although oat makes a naturally creamy plant-based m*lk, the addition of fat helps to make it super, extra creamy. Fat also allows it to froth up in your coffee or hot bevvies.
We choose to use sunflower oil instead of canola as it’s rich in Vitamin E and lower in saturated fat. The sunflower oil we use does not rely on chemicals to get the oil out of the plant. Other brands may add canola oil because it is less expensive, however, we strive to choose ingredients which are better for you and our planet.
10. Oats + pesticides? What’s up with that?
A: Like all crops, oats sometimes rely on herbicides to control weeds + grubby pests. The good news is that our oat supplier, Grain Millers, has very strict rules about which herbicides are allowed to touch our oats.
Oat is also better at relying on natural remedies first, like early planting. Early establishment of oats allows the crop to canopy and compete better with weeds. They are also known to provide an allelopathic (the chemical inhibition of one plant acting as a germination or growth inhibitor) residue that hinders germination of many weeds. In addition, the seeding rate plays a factor in overall weed control. An adequate stand will help shade and create stronger competition against weeds.
With conventional oats (ie: not organic), farmers are allowed to use a select number of approved herbicides to help promote weed control. At the end of the day, buying organic is the only way to ensure your oat milk is free from pesticides + herbicides.
11. I’m hearing about Round-Up (a probable carcinogen) as it is often used to speed up drying time needed to harvest grains. Could it be found in Earth’s Own Oat m*lk?
Not a chance. Our supplier, Grain Millers, intentionally buy 100% glyphosate free oats from farmers that don’t use Round-Up (glyphosate). They made a public announcement last year that they would not buy Canadian oats desiccated with glyphosate (heck yeah!).
12. What about GMO’s? Do you source strange hybrid ingredients that have been modified from their original state?
Never! Earth’s Own only sources ingredients verified by the Non-GMO Project. Every time.
13. Your front of pack claims that Oat is grown using 7x less water than almond or cow’s milk. How do you figure that?
We know, right?! The amazing thing about growing oats in Canada (think beautiful, expansive prairies) is that they don’t need a lot of help to grow. Just good old-fashioned rainwater & sunshine. And because there is no irrigation or heavy pesticide use, it doesn’t use or pollute the groundwater (a big factor in the high almond water intake).
You may ask how we figured all this out. The good folks who conducted the original Water Footprint study have an amazingly scientific methodology that we followed with a full report to back-up our findings.
14. Your Earth’s Own Oat Chocolate carton says it’s made from 50% less sugar than chocolate dairy milk. How did you calculate this?
Pretty amazing eh! Yes, our Oat Chocolate is made with 50% less sugar than chocolate dairy milk as per the Canadian Nutrient Files of 1% MF Chocolate Milk.
What is the Canadian Nutrient File you ask? It’s a database that reports out the different nutrients in over 5,000 types of food here in Canada. It’s pretty awesome- check out this link with code 4711 to see the stats on chocolate dairy milk.
15. On your Oat packaging you show Nut-free and Soy-free logos, but you also say ‘produced in a facility that also processes tree nuts and soy’. What’s up with that?
You are correct. Let us explain!
Legally, we have to state on our packaging that our Oat M*lk is produced in a facility that also processes tree nuts and soy. Since we also make Almond, Cashew and Soy beverages in the same facility, we are required by the CFIA to communicate this.
So how can we then claim that our products are Nut-Free and Soy-Free? Good question!
We have very strict allergen protocols in place that ensures our oat products test nuts and soy to be at 0 ppm (parts per million), which means it has absolutely no traces of nuts or soy (as per CFIA’s established limit).
The operating procedures at our facilities require nut and soy ingredients to be completely segregated, so no cross contamination occurs when making Oat m*lk versus Almond, Cashew or Soy. We also conduct tests between each production run to ensure cleaning and sanitation has removed any traces of existing allergens from the previously run product. Then, as a final step, we test each and every Oat m*lk carton for nuts or soy to ensure we are meeting CFIA’s zero parts per million standard.
If anything tests positive, we do not release the product. The batch is immediately destroyed and we start the whole process again from the beginning.
16. I bought one of your shelf stable products and there was no seal when I twisted the cap. Is there a tamper-proof seal missing?
We use a super simple ‘twist and click’ security seal. When opening your product for the first time, as long as the cap and tamper ring are intact, the seal is super secure. When you twist the cap you’ll hear a CLICK, which breaks this seal and punctures the foil simultaneously. Although this works differently than our chilled cartons, it accomplishes the same thing!
