Frequently Asked Questions

We know allergens are serious business and we want you to feel 100% comfortable with our gluten-free claim. So, grab a cup of coffee and get comfy, it’s a bit of a long read!

For starters, our oat supplier is gluten-free certified, and our oats are grown under the Purity Protocol. It means that our oats come from pure and uncontaminated seeds grown on fields without wheat, rye or barley in the crop rotation for at least 3 years. They are seeded and harvested using dedicated machinery and transported using thoroughly cleaned equipment. The oats are then processed in a dedicated gluten-free facility and extensively tested for gluten contamination. Gluten presence must be below 5 ppm.

But we don’t stop there! At our plants, after we create our oat base, we test it for gluten before we start making our oat m*lk with it. The other great news is that we don’t have any ingredients containing gluten present at our plants. Yet, we regularly test our finished oat m*lk for gluten to ensure we are meeting our own company standard of 5 parts per million, which is waaaay lower than CFIA’s requirement to be labeled gluten-free (up to 20 parts per million). Yup, it’s pretty legit!

If you have celiac disease, Health Canada has some super helpful resources on what celiac safe means. Chatting with your doctor to ensure our oat m*lk is the right fit for you may also be a good idea!

You bet, but not all at the same time! Our range of refrigerated Oat M*lks (1.75L), including Oat Original, Oat Vanilla, Oat Chocolate and Naked Oat, have already transitioned to gluten-free and are available now in stores (yay!). Our Oat Creamers will be next. For our shelf-stable cartons (946ml), the transition will take a bit longer because they have a much longer shelf-life before opening (12 months from production to be exact!). You may see the non-gluten-free 946ml cartons on shelves until retailers run out of inventory and replace it with our new gluten-free Oat m*lk. During this transition, please check the packaging: anything labeled gluten-free is 100% gluten-free.

Oats are naturally high in carbohydrates which contain starch and some sugars. We use natural enzymes to break down the whole oat, which means we get a creamy (and oh-so tasty) liquid instead of a thick, oatmeal like substance. During this process, the natural long chain carbohydrates are “cut” into smaller chain carbohydrates which is actually sugar. Long story short, we don’t add sugar into our Oat Original but it is naturally produced from our processing.

If you’re looking for the perfect match with zero sugar, look no further than our Oat Zero Sugar or our Unsweetened Original Almond M*lk 🎉

First of all, great catch!

We are super proud that our Oat M*lk was voted Canada’s Best Tasting Oat but here at Earth’s Own, we don’t settle for status quo, and in our relentless quest for the very best tasting plant-based foods, we figured there was room for improvement.

Our team has been hard at work (for years!), trying to find ways to improve the taste and mouthfeel. It was a long journey, but we are super proud of the result! Our new oat m*lk (we like to call it Oat 3.0) is smoother, lighter, still super creamy but less chalky, a little sweeter (with no sugar added!) and has a more subtle oat taste (all music to our ears!). This change meant a little more naturally-occurring sugar from the breakdown of oats, fewer calories, and a little less protein and carbs per cup. In our humble opinion, the new formula is so good, it’s well worth the change. (Psst, did we mention our new oat m*lk is also gluten-free and glyphosate-free!)

If you are looking for more protein, you may want to try our Soy Original or Soy Unsweetened, they have 6g and 7g of protein per cup. If sugar is a concern for you, our Oat Zero Sugar and Almond Unsweetened are also great options!

The great thing about growing oats is that they are pretty resilient compared to other crops – they don’t need a whole lot of help to grow other than good old rainwater and sunshine. But like all crops, oats sometimes rely on pesticides to control weeds + grubby pests. The good news is that we strongly say no to glyphosates and chlormequat. Our oat growers also work with agronomists and they will only use registered chemicals if required. Any chemical used must comply with the regulations and Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) set by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), an arm of Health Canada. For more information on MRLs, check out the following link: Maximum residue limits, human health, and food safety – Canada.ca
