Oat Chocolate: Happy is as Happy Drinks

oat-chocolate-carton

There are those who say that drinking chocolate milk means you never fully grew up. To which we say, “And your point is…?”

Delicious to a new degree, our gluten-free Oat Chocolate is Canada’s most loved oat m*lk, made with half the sugar of chocolate dairy milk and just the right balance of creaminess and chocolatey-ness. And like all our oat m*lks, it’s grown using 7x less water than almond m*lk or cow’s milk.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’re so proud to support Canadian farmers! Our Oat M*lk is made from 100% Canadian-grown oats from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. That’s why you’ll see the maple leaf proudly featured on our packaging.

We know allergens are serious business and we want you to feel 100% comfortable with our gluten-free claim. So, grab a cup of coffee and get comfy, it’s a bit of a long read!

For starters, our oat grain supplier is gluten-free certified, and our oats are grown under the Purity Protocol. It means that our oats come from pure and uncontaminated seeds grown on fields without wheat, rye or barley in the crop rotation for at least 3 years. They are seeded and harvested using dedicated machinery and transported using thoroughly cleaned equipment. The oats are then processed in a dedicated gluten-free facility and extensively tested for gluten contamination. Gluten presence must be below 5 ppm.

For our oat flour used in Oat Zero Sugar, oats are not processed under the Purity Protocol but we are happy to share that the gluten free oat flour meet the requirements of the Gluten-Free Certification Program Global Standard.

But we don’t stop there! At our plants, after we create our oat base, we test it for gluten before we start making our Oat M*lk with it. The other great news is that we don’t have any ingredients containing gluten present at our plants. Yet, we regularly test our finished Oat M*lk for gluten to ensure we are meeting our own company standard of 5 parts per million, which is way lower than CFIA’s requirement to be labeled gluten-free (up to 20 parts per million). Yup, it’s pretty legit!

If you have celiac disease, Health Canada has some super helpful resources on what celiac safe means. Chatting with your doctor to ensure our oat m*lk is the right fit for you may also be a good idea!

Sunflower oil helps give our Oat M*lk the smooth, creamy texture we all love. Oats already bring plenty of creaminess on their own, but adding a little fat helps create the rich, satisfying mouthfeel we were after.

We know there’s been a lot of conversation about seed oils lately, and we totally get why you might have questions. Sunflower oil is a food ingredient that’s been safely used in a wide range of products for years. When it comes to nutrition, it’s helpful to consider the overall diet rather than focusing on one ingredient alone.

There’s another reason we use sunflower oil, too. The fat helps with the delivery of fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamins A and D, which we add to our Oat M*lk through fortification.

We also chose sunflower oil because it has a mild, neutral flavour that lets the natural oat flavour come through. Oils with a stronger flavour, like olive or avocado oil, could change the taste of the Oat M*lk.

That said, we totally get that sunflower oil isn’t for everyone. You’re not alone in your concerns, which is why we’re exploring alternatives. Finding a non-seed oil that still gives us the same delicious taste and texture isn’t simple, but it’s something we’re looking into because we know it matters to our community.

In the meantime, have you tried our Naked Oat? Just 4 simple ingredients: Canadian oats, water, sea salt, and enzyme. No oils, no extras, just pure oat-y goodness.
